Steve Question #85

Dear Joshua,

Is it a worthwhile goal to just be happy by just "being"? Being nothing but healthy, physical, and breathing and not needing/wanting anything. And you're able to be supremely happy! The reason I ask is that when I want to put a smile on my face, I always have to think of something outside of my self that brings me happiness - material things, relationships, etc. I'm just curious what affect it would have on my life if I could be happy with nothing but me. Or would that cause you to not care if tomorrow shows up?

Thanks!
Steve

Dear Steve,

Being happy just being is the only important goal and is the highest expression of you. To even think it's a goal means that you believe experience creates how you feel rather than understanding that how you feel creates experiences. When you feel good just being, you understand exactly how you are designed to exist in this physical environment. You do not look for outside influences to make you feel good or cause you to feel bad. You feel good first and then your reality reflects that feeling back to you in many manifestations of experiences and objects.

Right now, as you read this answer, you are just being and you might feel good. In fact, before you picked up your ipad to read this answer, you might have intended to feel good first. Then as you read the answer and are aligned with it, you feel even better. Why is this? It's due to the fact that your thoughts and feelings are aligned with your inner self because they are aligned with what's wanted. So, you could say that reading our answer "made" you feel good. But did it really or were you already aligned with feeling good?

Now look at it in reverse. Let's say you meditated for a few minutes before reading our answer and you intended to feel good. Then you read something and what you read "made" you feel bad. You believe that it was the material you read which caused you to feel bad. You were feeling good before you read it and now, as a result of reading, you feel bad. The outside conditions caused you to move from feeling good to feeling bad. It wasn't you, it was the outside circumstances over which you had no control.

This, as you now understand, is a false premise, but most people approach life from this belief that outside conditions control how one feels. If you were unaware of the laws of the universe, you could see how they might believe this to be the case. But, as you know, it is not the case at all.

You have total control over how you feel in every condition. No matter what is happening, how bad or good you perceive it to be, you have control over how you feel about it. If it feels bad, you can understand that the only possible way you could experience negative emotion is if you were looking at the condition from a perspective that does not serve you. If you believed that what we said was upsetting in some way, it's because you are looking at it from a limited perspective and that is an indication of a limiting, fear-based belief you hold. So, what you now do is analyze how and why you feel negative emotion, identify the limiting belief, provide yourself with evidence that the belief is false, and seek relief.

The same is true when you feel positive emotion. If you read our words and feel good, it's only because you are looking at it in a way that makes you feel good. The message is neutral. It's neither good nor bad. How you feel about it is the only thing that is relevant. If you feel good, then you are looking at the words in a way that aligns with how your inner self feels about it. The words did not make you feel good, you did.

So feeling good, being happy, experiencing joy, yes, these are the only things that matter in this existence. All else is irrelevant. You could sit on a park bench, be homeless, be alone, have no money, job, friends, or any physical possessions and be completely and utterly happy just being. It really is true. You do not need anything to make yourself happy because nothing outside yourself can inherently cause you to be happy. It is only you who can make yourself feel happy.

We will give you an example. Let's say that you were given a suitcase full of cash. There was enough money in that suitcase to allow you to live whatever dreams you had and more. You would never have to work again. Would that make you happy? It depends. Does the suitcase come with some conditions? What if you could keep the money but could never talk to us again to to anyone who taught the laws of the universe? Suddenly the money does not cause you to be happy.

When you can be happy regardless of the conditions, you have come to learn everything we have to teach. This is the only important lesson we have. Everything else we talk about is simply the means by which we hope to get you to this message. You can not only be happy just being, being happy just existing is the basic design of the physical world. All of the other entities existing in physical reality, from the smallest single-cell organism to the largest mammal, all exist in a state of contented beingness. It is natural to them. It is only man who must be taught this most basic principle of all existence.

You are eternal, there's nothing to do but be. Start being happy.

Joshua
