Dear Allyson,
We like to say that desire is the engine of manifestation. Without desire there would be no manifestation. As you live your life you create preferences and desires. The desires are sent out into the universe and the universe, via the Law of Attraction, brings forth your desire into physical reality if you allow it. If you fully allowed yourself to be transformed into the version of you who was a compatible match to your desire, you would manifest it easily and effortlessly. But there's a catch. You do not always want to change into the version of you who matches your desire. A person wants to manifest a pile of money but he thinks rich people are bad and so he resists becoming a rich person. He does not want to change into a rich person. He feels comfortable being poor.
You have desires. The version of you who is not a match to your desire exists as you are now. You have this idea of who you are and it is relatively rigid. You might resist the changes necessary to make you the vibrational match to the desire. You might feel uncomfortable as you are asked to make those changes.
Let's say that you want a completely easy and unconditionally loving relationship with Rick. You want to have a harmonious relationship with no conflict. This is a true desire and it perfectly aligns with who you are. And so you will enter manifestation events with Rick that you might call arguments. In the argument, you feel negative emotion because you are taking a limited view of the situation. You have a disagreement. You want Rick to be different than he is. If Rick is different, you will feel safe. However, it is not up to Rick to make you feel safe. You must feel secure first and not depend on Rick to make you feel secure. Once you feel secure, then you will be able to love him without the condition of him making you feel secure. But you resist this. You think you need to feel secure in the relationship before you can love Rick without this condition. Your limiting belief is that it is his responsibility to make you feel secure. "If he loved me..." What you are trying to do is control how Rick behaves.
If he behaves lovingly, you feel good because you fool yourself into feeling secure. If he acts in a way that you do not like, you feel insecure and you want him to be different. The version of you who will love Rick unconditionally will be the version that does not need Rick or anyone else to make you feel secure or loved. So until you come to this version of yourself, the universe will continually place you into these manifestation events (arguments) until you uncover and process your limiting belief around this subject.
Do you see that you have asked for something and the universe is responding to your request not by bringing it to you, but by molding you into the version of yourself who is a match to what you truly want? If you felt terribly insecure and you really, really wanted to love unconditionally, you would face so many highly intense manifestation events that you would either quickly transform into the version of you that matched your desire or you would have to leave the relationship because it would be too painful. If you sort of wanted to love unconditionally, but you didn't really mind how the relationship was going right now, then you would occasionally argue or bicker and that would be the extent of it. The stronger the desire, the more intense the manifestation events. The less resistance, the quicker you will change into the version of you who is ready to receive all that you want.
If you want something badly, but are not a close match to it, then you must allow the universe to mold you. It will do so by inspiring you to certain actions that will cause you to transform. If there is resistance around that transformation, it will be shown to you quite obviously in the form of a manifestation event. It's quite a nice system, isn't it?
